These two are a bit more elementary, but absolutely necessary nonetheless:
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Comics-The-Invisible-Art/dp/006097625X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332806277&sr=8-1
Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative http://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Storytelling-Visual-Narrative-Instructional/dp/039333127X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332806256&sr=8-1
The nice thing is both of these books have been around sometime, so you should be able to track them down at a library.
Great suggestions. I own all of them and endorse. I don't see Keri on the site yet, but the Book I mentioned was right. The Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle were the standard for delivering etiquette in the post war period. Highly recommended.
You beat me to it, Chris.
